K.T. Raine on the current publishing market
What do you think about the current publishing market?
by K.T. Raine
The publishing industry is incredibly tough and competitive and always has been. And this is true whether your books are published by a traditional publisher like Scholastic or Hyperion, or you publish them yourself. I’ve experienced both methods and while there are certainly advantages to being traditionally published—an upfront advance for one thing—either kind of publishing is a huge amount of work and demands much from the author.
One thing that truly revolutionized the industry was the invention of print-on-demand. This is a method of printing that’s exactly what it sounds like. Companies like Amazon’s KDP or Ingram Spark don’t print a copy of your book until it’s ordered by a customer. Only then is it printed and shipped. This makes so much more sense than the old days when hundreds or thousands of copies of a title were printed and then stored in a warehouse someplace. Print-on-demand is really what’s enabled the huge boom in self-publishing because it offers authors a cheap and highly effective way to offer their books for sale.
The downside to this “easy” process is that countless shoddy books are being created by writers who haven’t put in the many years of work required to learn the craft of storytelling. Many haven’t put in any work at all! They don’t have a clue how to plot, develop characters, revise, edit and create a great story worthy of a reader’s time or dollars. Because of this, it takes an incredible amount of work and effort to prove yourself as a writer and earn the trust of readers. But when you do, and a reader responds with a personal email, comment, or a positive review … well, then it’s all worth it.

Book 2 in the Huckleberry Ridge Romance series.
Okay, so I admit it, I'm a true romantic at heart, and I've always been a sucker for a good, clean love story with a happy ending. My favorite stories involve spunky but sweet heroines, strong, swoon-worthy guys who aren't afraid to take charge ... oh, and a dog in the mix never hurt either. So guess what? Those are the type of stories I write! Just in case you're curious, I live in the beautiful mountains of North Idaho with my hubby of 30 years and our adorable Beagle mix Stella, one of the many rescue pups I've adopted over the years.
When I'm not reading or plotting my next novel, I enjoy spending time with my family, gardening, going for hikes, or soaking in my hot tub--hands down the best place to read--print anyway. I do housework when I must and laundry when we run out of clean underwear. So enough about me. If you want to know more visit my website at www.ktraineromance.com.
